The Strength of Sadness

While most people might have said that they "feel depressed" at some point in their life, the majority of people don't really know what it feels like for your mind and body to be taken over by depression. It is a mental illness that not only can make you feel sad, hopeless and isolated, but it is something that has physical effects and can strike at any time. For those who suffer from depression, it is a part of who they are every day, even on days when they are feeling their best. And while depression does cause suffering, it can also make you a more compassionate and resilient person. Depression builds character, as all scars and struggles do in life. This design, created by Spanish artist Encarna Dorado, is inspired by the feeling isolation, sadness and strength all at the same time.

What do you think of this design?  What images and thoughts does it conjure up in you and how does it help show the world who you are?  Add to the conversation by commenting below.

As someone with depression, this piece is a good illustration of how I feel. The paper boats are my thoughts and plans that sometimes seem to float out of reach on a sea of the chemical imbalance in my brain.

I like the way the water is contained by the hat and then the origami cranes seem to change into origami boats to land on the water.
Something about the woman’s jaw and shoulder seems like an altered photograph, but it’s hard to tell. It’s so surreal that it’s almost assaultively so.

This reminds of the works by painter René Magritte. His paintings offered a surrealist point of view and typically had people or faces in airy spaces. They are isolated and sterile, kind of like this image here.
