My Precious Ukraine

This original design, created exclusively for us by a Ukrainian artist, shows her feelings of anguish, loss and hope for her home nation. A country struggling to find it's identity, Ukraine is enduring a crisis which has the world's attention. But, it is not a country that is alone in its suffering. There have been many nations throughout time that have encountered hardships and many people who could identify with what Ukraine's people are going through. It is a crisis that can leave an entire nation feeling heartbroken and suffering from immense loss. Show your solidarity with their struggles and their cause with this haunting design.

The thing that stands out to me most in this piece is the gear-like shapes in her head. How many brilliant minds have been suppressed and snuffed out by war? What would the world be like if we as a species were capable of finding peaceful solutions to resolve our differences?

The artist does an excellent job of communicating her conflicting feelings in this simple illustration. Raymond describes the figure as matronly; the way she is holding her wheat(?) close to the heart is reminiscent of mother and child. Though the woman is facing a hailstorm of bullets, the interaction of the diagonal, organic lines that make up this composition are almost soothing to look at.

It’s comforting to be able to quickly grasp an symbolic image, which we do with this one. The woman is protecting some objects that look like a combination of wheat and buildings while enduring a hail of bullets. She is strictly matronly with her high nest of hair, broad hips and round arms. I don’t understand why her facial features seem to be that of a jack-o-lantern. Maybe I’m missing something.
