Ego Monster

The ego is a bizarre beast that dwells within us all. And it is an identity of our own construction- an identity which is false. It’s built by our beliefs about who we are and what we can or cannot do. Because our ego is built-up by everything that happens in our life, letting go of it will take practice.

This design reminds us that our ego is always building a self-image of false beliefs. We need to remember to close those ego eyes and detach from individual thoughts that reinforce the ego. Only then can we let go of ego driven beliefs and begin seeing our true selves.

Few people are truly good at hiding their addiction from the world. But they try because they feel guilt, shame, or embarrassment about the part of their life that’s spinning out of control. The ugly creature of addiction takes hold and negatively affects personal, family, and work relationships. At the risk of being judged, the addict feels it’s easier to hide the addicted monster than to talk about it.

Artist, Jordan Bouma, illustrates how alcoholism can be a slow fade from “fun times” to addiction with drastic consequences.  Jordan says, "the artwork is simplistic in its melancholy scribbles, making the transition from human to creature very smooth on the eyes. The messy style shows the violent movements of the still image as the creature loses himself to drunken tendencies and then reverts back in to a small child, a childhood maybe he was trying to drown in booze."  This design is about breaking the silence and starting the tough conversation about addiction. When we talk about a problem we have, the secret is then out and the path to recovery can be laid.

Police

Being a police officer is a difficult job. What they have to see and deal with is unimaginable. It's tragic when some officers become the monstrous things they see in the night.  According to Criminology Careers Expert, Timothy Roufa, "The majority of officers are very well aware of the high ethical standard they are held to, and want very much to uphold the public trust.  While they do stick together in many ways, only a select filthy few fail to understand that bad cops make all officers appear unethical."

The Peekaboo Police design is a concept about officers who slowly lose themselves in criminal acts. This design touches on a difficult concept, and is not some anti-police message.

Artist Jordan Bouma likes to focus on designs that spread awareness about difficult topics.  He has created pieces related to alcoholism, self-esteem, and the effects of media on society- as well as others.  Jordan commonly uses bears and other animals as symbols within his art.

Being a "Foreigner" goes beyond living in another country.  It encompasses foreign travel as well. Whether you're from Canada visiting Christ The Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro or you live in Paris and encounter an new neighbor from Easter Island, all it takes is tolerance of our unique backgrounds to learn from each other instead of fearing someone simply because of a difference.  The challenge is to learn to embrace our differences instead of making them out to be wrong or a threat.

This design begs to start an important conversation; one about diversity, with the hope of bringing about acceptance of each other.  We have so much we can learn from one another. All we need to do is stop making our ancestry or our country of origin the "right" one or more important than the person we are - full of feelings and opinions that are unique and amazing.

Fire and Ice

How are you influencing others? Are you thoughtful with your words before you speak them?  This design, by talented artist Jill Henrichsen, at first glance, may seem to suggest passion and romance. But, as well as that, it dares to deliver a much deeper message. To some, behind the seemingly soft gestures and colors, they see hidden signs of emotional abuse. How one may be "melted into a hellish world by the manipulating or troubling tactics of another." Others may see a positive influence as one helps warm the other's icy exterior or cools their dangerously wild spirit.

Steve Maraboli said, “Sometimes the most painful lessons are delivered by someone masquerading as a soul mate….” But at the same time healthy relationships can actually build up each individual without destroying parts of the other. As Jill sees it, “Marriage isn’t about finding the right person, it’s being the right person.”  In other terms, it is when you can truly love yourself that you will truly find love with another.

Gratitude Motif

No matter what's going on in your life, it's important to remember to be grateful. Did you experience a stranger's moment of kindness? A friend's words of encouragement? Or maybe a mother's embrace at a time when you needed comfort? You might even be grateful for just being alive. Whatever your reason, gratitude should be celebrated.

This design was created to remind you to have gratitude for everything in life. Even when things get tough, having gratitude for the things you do have can bring some sunshine to your day. There's always something to be grateful for, and the bright colors of this design combined with the cheerful flowers serve as an excellent reminder of that message.

You can also use it as a reminder to express your gratitude. A simple "Thank you" goes a long way. Have you ever had someone appreciate something you did? It's a great feeling. Take the time to express your gratitude to someone you care about- spread the cheer. Chances are, it will make you feel as good as it makes them feel.

Deeply Rooted

When life gets tough, it can be hard to see an end to the struggle. Whether you're having trouble at school, in your home, or with inner demons, the weight of your troubles can bury you and seem unbearable. It may get so bad that you don't see any way out.

This design was created to remind you that there is an end to your struggle, and that you'll come out stronger and tougher. These storms that you face give you deeper roots- a friendship might become stronger, a family member might become closer to you, or your inner strength might develop. It is these roots that keep you from blowing away in the storms, and instead, you can weather them safely.

As your roots get deeper, life becomes easier. So when things get bleak and life seems impossible, just remember that you are rooted firmly to the ground. You can make it through the worst of storms because you have your roots, and nothing can stop you from growing.

It always seems, others will judge you no matter what you wear. When choosing an outfit for the day, choose one that will celebrate your personality or will show how you’re feeling. Accept your hurt and fear from the past, embrace it, and turn it into a positive. Wear what makes you feel like the special, unique person you are.  You decorate your home to reflect who you are. So, why not decorate yourself to Let Your Style Speak for You?

This is meant to inspire you to express your feelings through your individual style.  Love how you look, and connect to that struggling part of you that wants to be heard.  Discover who you are and what message you want to deliver.  If you, wear what fills your heart and spirit with joy; the meaningless judgment of others becomes unimportant.

Addicted to Tech

These days, technology is everywhere. Everyone walks around staring at their phones, tablets, and smart watches. It's so easy to get lost in the black hole that is the internet, and people forget that there's a real world around them.

Have you ever been lost in cyberspace? When life gets tough, it's easy to get lost in technology. Technology can become an addiction, and it can be just as damaging as any other addiction. You get sucked into it, and it grasps you so tightly that you can't get out of its hold.

Although you may initially turn to technology to solve your problems, it doesn't make your problems go away- it just makes things more difficult. You end up isolating yourself from the people that care about you. As you spend more and more time on your tech addiction, your relationships with friends and family suffer. As technology takes over your life, you're left alone and cut-off from the world.

This design was created to reminded you that there's so much more to life than computers or tech gadgets. Don't let yourself stare mindlessly at the screen all day; kick the technology addiction. Instead of hiding behind your computer, try appreciating what's around you.

Authenticity is something that we are all searching for in our lives.  We want to know that our relationships are based on truth and that we are living according to our own core values.  But, it is not so easy to live in a fully authentic way.  We are told that we should be certain things and should hide parts of ourselves from others for fear of not being accepted.

This design by Jill Henrichsen for our One Word Collection is all about having the courage to show your true self and encouraging others to do the same.  Once we all lower the masks that we put on, we will be able to have more honest and worthwhile relationships and healthier minds.
